Abstract
The Community Health Survey has been conducted every year as a mandatory survey since 2008, and has produced
statistics on health status per region (254 Si/Gun/Gu) every year to establish and evaluate each Community Health Plan. The survey targets are adults aged 19 years and over, and approximately 230,000 people participate in this survey throughout the country every year. The surveys in 254 regions collected information, which included over 300 questionnaires about overall health, such as health behaviors, health awareness. The survey in 2017 was performed from August 16 to November 23 by permitting trained staff members to visit target households and conduct interviews. As the results of the analysis, 11 key indicators are described in this issue.
According to the results of the Community Health Survey over the past decade, major health behaviors related to the
occurrence of chronic diseases have not been improving, except for smoking. In particular, obesity, walking practices, and physical activity have deteriorated continually. Regional disparities also did not show a significant decline in most of the indicators, and the regional gap in 2017 increased, compared to that in the previous year. In case of all health indicators, trends in all national and regional indicators were not the same. Even in the case of the smoking rate, which exhibits a decreasing trend at the national level, the number of regions wherein its indicator deteriorated was approximately onethird. To improve regional health indicators, the local health policy should be strengthened ystematically. Therefore, it is necessary to establish and implement the customized local health policy considering regional characteristics revealed from the Community Health Survey results. This would contribute to utilizing the limited resources efficiently and maximizing the effect of the regional health investment. The results of the survey are available at the Community Health Survey website (https://chs.cdc.go.kr).
